ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence)

This section describes how the ECDL fits in with the new IT Units in v1.1 of the CPD Programme.

What is the ECDL?

The ECDL (v4.0) has gained international recognition across most other sectors as a reliable indicator of someone’s IT skills at the time of testing. The ECDL is not, however, an occupational qualification and it relies totally on the ability to perform well in the tests for each of its seven modules.

It is thus not necessarily a good indicator of how well anyone can apply their skills to their job, simply how good they are using the IT available.

Successful module certification, or the whole award, can be used as credit towards the IT units in the Technicians CPD programme. In particular it can demonstrate knowledge and understanding and some specific skill application in certain areas of each Unit.
Gaining Credit from ECDL Modules

The precise amount of credit depends on the context of the whole evidence being presented (for instance someone could pass an ECDL module with a 60% mark but still fail to understand a key activity in the ITQ unit equivalent). The table below expands on this.
