About this Qualification
Who is it for?
Technical staff in the HE and FE sector who work in specialised environments such as laboratories or workshops and those based in seminar and office based environments.
It is aimed at technical staff involved with supporting teaching, research or both and seeks to recognise the more 'traditional' aspects of the technical role as well as those related to new and emerging technologies.
Why is it useful?
Technical roles within the HE structure have changed significantly over the last 10 years with a whole new range of skills and redefined job profiles emerging. The role of a technician is unique in terms of the breadth of skills groups it covers with more than one required at a high level of competency.
Over the last few years a widening gap has become apparent between the need for and provision of training and development opportunities that would equip these 'specialist' staff with the skills they need to carry out their roles and respond to the changing needs of the sector. The availability of training and development activities that are applicable to this group of staff has become limited and sporadic.
This qualification will provide a developmental route for HE and FE technical staff that is tailored to the 'specialist' nature of their roles whilst providing them with the skills they need to maintain their roles and respond to the changing pattern of needs within the sector.
The award is designed to be flexible in application and content and will meet the needs of the more 'traditional' skills groups as well as those related to new and development aspects of the technician's role.
